Chanel N°5: EDP vs Parfum vs L'Eau
N°5 is the most recognised fragrance in the world and the one most often bought for the wrong person. The three main versions span roughly a century of taste, and the distance between the oldest and the newest is enormous.
The short answer
The Parfum is the original - aldehydes, ylang-ylang and iris, powdery and unapologetically vintage. The Eau de Parfum is the same character made rounder and more floral, and is the usual middle answer. L'Eau is a modern rewrite: citrus-led, light, and aimed at somebody who has always found N°5 too old.

Buying N°5 as a gift without knowing which version is a coin flip. Somebody who wants the classic finds L'Eau empty; somebody who wants something modern finds the Parfum overwhelming.
