How to layer mukhamaria with perfume: the rules
- Oil first. Warm two pumps between clean palms until the oil turns clear.
- Hair, then pulse points. Work it through the mid-lengths and ends of damp or dry hair, avoiding the roots, then press what is left into your wrists, inner forearms and the base of your throat.
- Let it absorb. The scent settles within about ten minutes and softens as it wears, so wait before you spray.
- Perfume second, on skin and clothes. Spray the sides of your neck and your clothes: a collar, the shoulders of an abaya, the inside edge of a sheila. On delicate or light fabric, test a hidden spot first.
- Use less of both. If you usually wear four or five sprays, try two or three over the oil; on fine hair, one pump may be enough. You can add a spray later, but you cannot take one back.
Oil first, because it goes on with your hands and needs time to absorb; perfume last, because it is the layer that projects. Keep perfume off your roots and scalp: in your hair, the oil is the scent layer.

Adding bakhoor as a third layer
The oil scents your hair and skin, the perfume your skin and clothes, and bakhoor adds the smoke that settles into your abaya, sheila or kandura and into the room. It suits guest evenings, Fridays and Ramadan, and in many Gulf homes it is already part of getting ready. It is for the room and fabrics, not for skin.

Mamoul is rounded and gently sweet, with very little smoky edge. Oud Mubakhar is drier, smokier and not sweet.
The order is bakhoor on your clothes first, then the oil, then the perfume. Put two or three small pieces on a charcoal disc that has stopped sparking and turned evenly grey, or on an electric burner at low heat, and hold the garment over the smoke for a moment; with Oud Mubakhar, start with two chips. Keep oiled hair and loose fabric well above the burner, never close to the coal.
Use a proper burner on a heat-resistant surface, keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch, and never leave it unattended. Office day
Offices are closed, shared and air-conditioned, so aim for a scent only the person beside you notices: one pump of oil, one spray of perfume. Leave the bakhoor and Royal for the evening.
Family visit
Aim for warm and welcoming, not loud; there may be elders and small children in the room. If you are hosting, burn Mamoul before guests arrive and air the room once the smoke has moved through; under air conditioning it spreads more slowly and cleanly.
Wedding night

Wearing the full amount of both
Two layers add up. Your usual sprays over two pumps of oil can crowd an air-conditioned office, a car or a small majlis, so start with less of each.
Mixing opposite families
A fruity-floral oil under a smoky oud, or rich amber under a light floral, pulls in two directions. Stay within one row of the pairs table, or use Pure, which sits quietly under almost anything.
Spraying perfume on your roots
Even the oil stays off the roots; it belongs on the mid-lengths and ends. Keep perfume on skin and clothes, and off your scalp.
Full layering in the midday heat
Heat pushes scent outwards, so a pair that feels right in an air-conditioned hall can feel heavy outdoors at noon. On hot days, wear the oil with a single spray and save the full layering for the evening. And store both bottles closed, away from sun, cars and heat.
Wearing it from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah
