Mukhamaria (مخمرية) is a traditional Gulf perfumed preparation for the hair and body, worn in many Emirati and Gulf homes for occasions such as weddings, henna nights and Eid. Today it is sold mostly as creams and oils; Gloria's six are lightweight scented oils that smooth and add shine to your lengths and leave a long-wearing scent on hair and skin. To use one, warm two pumps between your palms, smooth them through the mid-lengths and ends of damp or dry hair, avoiding the roots, then press what is left into your wrists and the base of your throat.
What is mukhamaria?
Traditionally, mukhamaria was made at home. In many Emirati and Gulf households it was blended from ingredients such as saffron, rose, musk, sandalwood and oud oil, and worn by women, especially for occasions such as weddings, henna nights and Eid.
It has been made in thicker, paste-like forms and in more liquid ones. Modern versions are sold ready-made, as creams and as oils. Gloria's are oils: six scents, each 50 ml in a pump bottle labelled "Gloria Muhkammaria Hair & Body".
You will see the name spelled several ways, including mukhamaria, mukhammaria, mukhamria and mukhammariya, and Gloria's own label uses Muhkammaria. All of them mean the same thing: a scent you wear in your hair and on your skin as part of getting ready.
Mukhamaria vs perfume vs an ordinary hair oil
Mukhamaria does part of a hair oil's job and part of a perfume's. The difference shows in where each one goes and how it wears.

So a hair oil is mostly about texture, and a perfume is mostly about scent. Mukhamaria does both at once, and it puts the scent in your hair, which generally holds fragrance longer than skin and releases it as you move.
It is worth being clear about what it is not. Gloria's mukhamaria is not a treatment and does not fix or heal hair; it is a finishing step that leaves your lengths smoother, shinier and scented. It does not replace your perfume either. The two work well together, as you will see below.
How to use mukhamaria, step by step
This is the method Gloria gives for its oils, and it suits most hair:
- Dispense. Put two pumps into clean palms.
- Warm. Rub your hands together until the oil turns clear.
- Apply to the lengths. Smooth it through the mid-lengths and ends of damp or dry hair, starting at the ends and working up. Keep it away from the roots.
- Use what is left. Press the oil left on your palms into your wrists, inner forearms and the base of your throat.
- Let it absorb. The scent settles within about ten minutes and softens as it wears.
How much to use
Two pumps is the starting point. If your hair is fine or short, one may be enough. If it is long, thick or very dry at the ends, add a third, but only after the first two have gone in and you can see what your hair still needs. Too much oil shows up as heaviness long before it shows up as extra scent.
Damp or dry hair
Both work. On damp hair, towel-dried so it is not dripping, the oil spreads more easily and evenly, which helps with thick and curly hair. On dry hair you control exactly where it goes and see the shine straight away, which suits fine hair and a quick touch-up before you go out.
Before a sheila or hijab
If you cover your hair, make mukhamaria one of the first steps of getting ready, not the last. Give it a few minutes to absorb before the fabric goes on: any oil can mark a scarf it touches while still wet, especially silk and light colours.
Keep it to the mid-lengths and ends, away from the hairline where the fabric sits, and wipe your hands before you pick up your sheila (or shayla) or hijab. If your scarf wraps closely around your neck, press the leftover oil into your wrists and forearms instead of your throat.
Adjusting mukhamaria to your hair type
Gloria's oils suit all hair types: light enough for fine hair if used sparingly, rich enough for thick, dry or textured lengths. What changes is the amount and where it goes.
Fine hair
Start with one pump on dry hair, so you can see where it lands, and keep it well below the roots. For a quiet scent that also suits daytime, Violet is the one Gloria describes as good for fine hair.
Thick hair
Use the full two pumps, and a third if your hair is long. Work in sections: split your hair into two or three parts and smooth the oil through each, so the underneath layers get some and not just the surface.
Curly or textured hair
Apply it to damp hair. Glide the oil over the lengths with flat palms, then scrunch upwards rather than raking your fingers through, which can pull curls apart. Textured ends are often the driest part, so give them a little extra.
Dry ends
Concentrate the oil where the dryness is: the last few centimetres. Between washes, a light touch on dry ends smooths them and adds shine. It will not mend split ends, though; only a trim removes them.
Using mukhamaria on your skin, and what to avoid
The oil left on your palms is not waste. Gloria's method is to press it into your wrists, inner forearms and the base of your throat, warm pulse points where scent rises from the skin. You can also smooth a little along your arms after a shower, where it softens the skin and adds a layer of scent under the sleeves of an abaya or kandura.
What to avoid:
- Roots, if your hair is fine. Oil there looks flat and heavy before it smells any stronger.
- Your eyes. Keep it well away from them, and wipe your fingertips before you touch your face.
- Broken or irritated skin. Skip those areas, and stop using it if it causes irritation.
- Dressing straight away. Let it absorb before silk, light colours or a freshly pressed kandura touch your skin.
If your skin is sensitive to fragrance, try a little on your inner forearm first and wait before using it more widely. Mukhamaria is for external use only.
Choosing between Gloria's six mukhamarias
All six are lightweight oils used the same way; what changes is the scent and how noticeable it is. Pure and Royal, at AED 90, are not inspired by any designer perfume. Pure Mukhamaria, for every day
Vanilla and white musk: soft, clean and the quietest of the six. It is the one for work and family days, when you want your hair to smell good without announcing it. It also works as a soft base under almost any perfume, which makes it the safest first bottle if you are unsure.
Royal Mukhamaria, for evenings and weddings
Amber, and the richest of the six. It leaves a noticeable signature, the kind you want for an evening out or a wedding. Use it sparingly on fine hair. Its amber sits naturally with Gloria's oud perfumes and with Premium Mamoul bakhoor.
Scarlet Mukhamaria, polished and noticeable
Saffron, jasmine, cedar and ambergris, inspired by Baccarat Rouge 540. It is polished and noticeable, a good choice if you love that direction and want it in your hair as well as on your skin.
Violet Mukhamaria, quiet and floral
Cherry blossom, rose and white musk, inspired by Dior Sakura. Quiet and close, it is the natural pick for fine hair and for daytime, including warm days when a richer scent would feel like too much.
Ghazal Mukhamaria, fruity but not sugary
Mandarin blossom, blackberry, water lily and white musk, inspired by Victoria's Secret Love is Heavenly. It is fruity-floral without being sugary, and suits you if your favourite perfumes lean fruity and floral.
Princess Mukhamaria, a classic floral
Aldehydes, neroli, ylang-ylang and vanilla, inspired by Chanel N°5. A polished classic floral, and the one to choose if your taste runs to classic perfumes.
How long it lasts, and storing it in UAE heat
Gloria describes the scent as long-wearing on hair and skin, softening as it wears. How long you notice it depends on how much you used, your hair and your day. An evening in an air-conditioned majlis is easier on scent than an afternoon outdoors in August, because heat makes any fragrance rise faster and fade sooner.
Keeping the scent going
- Put most of it in your hair. That is where the scent lasts best; your skin gets what is left on your palms.
- Refresh the ends, not the roots. Later in the day, a single pump spread over the ends brings the scent back without weighing your hair down.
- Layer it with a perfume in the same direction. Storing it in the heat
Gloria's advice is simple: keep the bottle closed, away from sun, cars and heat. In practice that means a drawer or cupboard in an air-conditioned room, not a sunny windowsill or a steamy bathroom shelf.

Questions people ask
Will mukhamaria make my hair greasy?
It should not, if the amount is right. Gloria's oils have a non-sticky, non-greasy finish, but any oil looks heavy if you use too much or take it up to the roots. Start with one pump on fine hair and two on thicker hair, keep to the mid-lengths and ends, and give it a few minutes to absorb before you judge.
Can I use mukhamaria every day?
Yes. It is a scented finishing oil, and how often you wear it is personal preference: keep it for occasions and Fridays, or use a pump every morning. If you apply it daily without washing in between, use a little less, as oil can build up on the lengths.
Can men use mukhamaria?
Mukhamaria has traditionally been worn by women, but the oil itself is a scented hair and body oil, and the label reads "Hair & Body". Short hair needs very little, so one pump is plenty, with most of it pressed into the wrists and forearms. Royal's amber or Scarlet's saffron and cedar are directions many men already wear.
Can I mix two mukhamarias?
Yes. The simplest way is to wear one in your hair and another on your skin, or to put a quiet one under a richer one: Pure, the quietest, sits comfortably under almost anything. Try a new combination on your wrist first, because two noticeable scents such as Scarlet and Royal can compete.
Can I wear mukhamaria with perfume?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to make a scent last. Apply the mukhamaria first, let it settle for about ten minutes, then spray your perfume on skin and clothes. A perfume that shares a direction with your mukhamaria keeps the two from clashing; the matched pairs are listed above.
Is mukhamaria too heavy for a summer day?
Not if you choose and apply it for the heat. Heat makes any scent more noticeable, so on a hot or humid day use one pump, keep most of it in your hair, and pick a quieter scent such as Pure or Violet. Apply it indoors, let it settle before you step out, and save Royal for the evening.
