Dubai Civil Defence has warned that careless use of bakhoor to perfume homes or clothes causes serious fires, and the UAE Civil Defence advice is clear: never leave burning incense unattended, put the burner out if you leave the house or go to sleep, keep it away from curtains, loose clothing and children, and use it in a well-ventilated room. Never put a lit burner inside a wardrobe, and never leave one in the car.

How to put perfume on an abaya without marks

• Patch-test first. Spray once on an inside seam or the inner hem, let it dry fully and check it in daylight. Some fabrics and light colours can mark, and delicate weaves such as chiffon need the most care.
• Spray from arm's length, so the mist spreads instead of pooling in one spot.
• Aim at the inside: the lining, the inner collar, the inside of the sleeves. The scent still rises, and the outer face stays clean.
