J'adore: the sunny bouquet
Calice Becker created J'adore for Dior in 1999, and it arrived in Hervé Van der Straeten's tear-drop bottle. It opens juicy rather than sharp, with pear, melon, peach and a little mandarin. The heart is a full white bouquet of jasmine, tuberose, lily-of-the-valley and rose, and the base settles into soft musk with a touch of vanilla and cedar.
It reads round and golden. There is no green bite and no spice, which is why it suits weddings and family gatherings: it smells of flowers rather than of a statement.
Coco Mademoiselle: citrus over a patchouli spine
Jacques Polge, Chanel's in-house perfumer at the time, built Coco Mademoiselle in 2001 on contrast. Orange and bergamot sparkle at the top, rose and jasmine form a clear heart, and patchouli and vetiver give it a grown-up backbone, softened by white musk and vanilla.
Perfume writers have called it the first "fruitchouli", the style of bright citrus and fruit over clean patchouli. On skin it feels polished and confident: more structure than J'adore, more warmth than Chance Eau Fraîche.
Chance Eau Fraîche: cold water and pale wood
Also by Jacques Polge, Eau Fraîche (2007) is the zesty member of the Chance family, sold in the round bottle that sets the Chance line apart from Chanel's usual square flacons. Lemon, citron and cedar open it; water hyacinth, pink pepper and jasmine form the heart; teak wood, iris, amber, patchouli, vetiver and white musk make a dry, clean base.
