Black Opium is Gloria Naturals' interpretation of Yves Saint Laurent's Black Opium Eau de Parfum, the coffee-and-vanilla gourmand from 2014, and it costs AED 120. Its note list follows the original's in full. Two things matter more than the resemblance: which of YSL's six Black Opiums you actually mean, and the fact that this is a night fragrance in a country where the day is 45 degrees.

YSL has built a family on the name, and they are not interchangeable.

If the bottle you remember was the classic black glass with the sparkle, it was the Eau de Parfum. That is what Gloria's Black Opium follows. If it was greener, redder or much heavier, it was a flanker, and this interpretation will not match that memory.
The notes, side by side
Gloria's Black Opium lists pear, pink pepper, orange blossom, jasmine, coffee, vanilla, patchouli, cedar and musk. The original Eau de Parfum's published structure is pear and pink pepper on top; coffee, jasmine and orange blossom in the heart; vanilla, patchouli, cedar and musk in the base. Some listings add bitter almond and liquorice as accents.
The core structure matches note for note. The accents (almond, liquorice) are not in Gloria's list; they are the small bitter edges that keep the original from being purely sweet. By composition, then, Black Opium should follow the original's shape, coffee over vanilla under white flowers, and may read a touch simpler and sweeter in the heart without those bitter accents. It should not be as heavy as the Intense or Le Parfum; the list has no extra vanilla and no added density.
The 40-degree rule
This is the part that matters most for a buyer in the UAE, and it applies to the original just as much as to the interpretation.
Coffee-vanilla gourmands are built for cold evenings. In heat, vanilla and coffee do not fade; they thicken. A style that is a warm hug at 22 degrees becomes a cloud at 40, and in a closed car it becomes the only thing anyone can smell. Wearing Black Opium to a noon errand in July is how it gets its reputation for being "too much".
The rule that works: from October to April, wear it whenever you like, one to two sprays. From May to September, wear it after sunset, indoors, one spray, and never in the car in the afternoon. Treated that way it is one of the most complimented styles there is.
Before you blind-buy
If you dislike sweet fragrance, stop here. There is no reading of this style that is not sweet. The coffee is roasted-sweet, the vanilla is vanilla, the flowers are creamy. People who wear fresh, citrus or green fragrances rarely convert to it.
If you wanted the Intense or Le Parfum, this will feel lighter. Those are different, denser fragrances.
As a gift: good for a woman who already wears gourmands or sweet orientals, and who goes out in the evening. Risky for a woman who wears fresh florals; risky for anyone who works in a small, shared, air-conditioned office and wears fragrance to work.
What will disappoint you compared with the original: the coffee. In the original, the coffee note is unusually realistic and slightly bitter, and it is what keeps the sweetness adult. That realism is the hardest part of this fragrance to follow. Judge Gloria's version on whether the coffee reads as coffee to you after twenty minutes; the vanilla and flowers are the easy part.

What people get wrong
Wearing it to work. In a Gulf office the air conditioning traps it. One spray, applied at home, and only if the office is large.
Judging it in a cold shop. At 22 degrees a gourmand is at its best behaviour. The shop is not August.
Buying it as a "signature" for daily wear. It is a signature for evenings. A daily signature here needs to survive noon, and this style is not built for it.
